Why Photovoltaics Make So Much Sense in Mallorca
Photovoltaics on Mallorca
The sun as a decisive factor
Photovoltaic systems generate electricity from sunlight—which means that the more sunshine there is, the more energy they produce. Mallorca is one of the sunniest regions in Europe, offering ideal conditions for the use of solar energy.
The figures speak for themselves: Mallorca enjoys an average of more than 300 sunny days per year and around 2,800 to 3,000 hours of sunshine. By comparison, Germany receives only around 1,500 to 1,800 hours of sunshine annually.
What this means in practice
More hours of sunshine mean higher yields—and this applies throughout the entire year:
- Spring & summer – Intense sunlight ensures peak energy production, making it ideal for energy-intensive appliances such as air-conditioning systems and pool pumps.
- Autumn & winter – Even during the cooler months, Mallorca enjoys significantly more sunshine than Central Europe. The system continues to operate efficiently.
- Stable throughout the year – Limited seasonal fluctuations ensure consistent and predictable energy production.
Mallorca in comparison with the rest of Europe
Mallorca is located in Southern Europe’s so-called solar belt. Solar radiation—measured in kilowatt-hours per square metre per year (kWh/m²)—is significantly higher here than in German-speaking countries.
This means that a solar system of the same size can produce considerably more electricity in Mallorca than, for example, in Germany or Austria.
For property owners on the island—whether they use their property as a primary or secondary residence—this is a clear advantage.
Solar energy that pays off
The combination of high solar radiation, stable weather conditions and consistently high energy demand throughout the year—caused by air conditioning, swimming pools and hot-water systems, for example—makes Mallorca one of the most attractive locations for photovoltaic systems in Europe.
A well-planned system can cover a substantial proportion of a property’s electricity requirements and contribute to long-term independence from the public power grid.
